paying for college

Postby firabejw08 on Mon Aug 03, 2009 7:06 pm

I am going to be a sophomore in college and my parents recently informed me that they will not be sending me back to college. Not going to college is not an option, so I need help on how I will be able to go to college. I am willing to take out loans and get a job. I just need some help on how I can manage to do all this without the help of my parents.

Hi fira, you can check http://www.college.gov/ http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

for detailed "official" information about financial aid and taking students loans for college.

Also the CollegeBoard or 3rd party sites have real-life advice such as Ctimes' Financial Aid Advice

Good luck and don't let money dissuade you from pursuing your degree... :D

I agree. Don't let money stop you, Fira. I went to a great university for 2.5 years before moving to a new state and transferring schools to be closer to my fiance. Now, in his third year of law school, he's broken up with me and my last year of school is being threatened because I currently don't have enough money to pay for school AND keep up with rent and utilities and my bills. But I can't let that stop me...so I'm spending most of my free time researching scholarship and grant opportunities and writing letters to celebrities (yes, celebrities) who enjoy philanthropy and telling my story. Never give up! And don't let men get in the way...lol.

If you can take any classes at a local community college and transfer your credits to the college you go to know, that could cut down on costs a lot. I'm taking about two years worth of classes at a community college before I transfer to a University, and the community college is about half the price. Just be sure to check into what credits will or won't transfer and for which classes.

Check out our new page on college scholarships for seniors on HowToGetIn. New pages also include a page on financial aid questions to ask prospective schools when your figuring out how to pay for college.
